To Thrift or Not to Thrift, that is the Question - Is H Mart the Answer?

On August 8th, Pandi was up bright and early, begging for her little walk. I wore a dress from Trouve that I bought last summer at the Salvation Army. I have taken it on a couple of vacations but never wore it. So today was the day! My necklace is by Cookie Lee, and my hair is yellow. I used a brand of hair color that I have never used before, and it came out yellow with white stripes. I decided to wait a couple of weeks before I fixed it, since I didn't want all my hair to fall out. Too bad the circus wasn't in town, because I could have made some money working as a clown.

On August 9th, we had a neighborhood garage sale. Doc scored a professional grade Coil magnifying glass that retails for $65 for $5 and a vintage A&W Root Beer mug.

I got a two-piece top and skirt from Talbots for $5. It retails for $139 for the skirt and $79 for the top.

On August 10th, Savers was having a sale, so Doc and I went over there. He got a few books, and I got this pumpkin spice bread loaf pan for my pie plate collection.

I also found a Misook jacket. They retail for $428 at Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales.

I found a lace top from Loft that retails for $59.

And a dress from either Shein or Temu. I usually don't thrift these inexpensive brands, but it was brand new with tags. You can see that it only costs $5.54 before taxes and tariffs. That usually adds about $10 to the cost. I wore one that is almost identical to the example on vacation and received endless compliments.

Then I found a Time and Tru T shirt dress. This is another cheap dress, retailing for only $13.98, but it was also new with tags.

Finally, I got a pair of Liz Claiborne sandals, also new, that retail for $34.99.

Now that our JC Penney is closing, I imagine that the unsold items will be in the thrifts in a month or so. I am vowing to stay away until October. Hopefully, I will not have any withdrawals.

So only the Misook blazer was a great find on this trip. I also really like the loaf pan.

On August 12th, Doc took his dad back to the DMV to renew his license. He can now drive until he is 99 years old. I went to Kohl's to get a couple of new towels. I wore the maxi dress from Dream of Me that I got last month.

My Ipsy bag came on August 13th. Inside, from top to bottom:

1) Beauty Vaulte Lengthening Mascara

2) Hey Honey Prime Mate Facial Primer

3) Seraphine Botanicals First Light Superfine Ultra Beaming highlighter in Melon Sorbet

4) Clinique Moisture Surge Active Glow Serum

5) Tigerlove Joyface Deep Cleansing Facial Treatment

On August 14th, we finally decided to go inside H Mart and take a look around. You go in through a door manned by an armed guard. Then you wind your way through bulk noodles and kitchen ware.

They also carry a lot of Hello Kitty stuff, mostly cosmetics.

The produce section is huge and very inexpensive. Broccoli was 49 cents a pound.

Here's a selection of ready-cooked lobsters. Four claws for $7.83, and whole ones for $9.37.

Thye had a million durians, and the Asian people were going nuts over them. I hear it's an acquired taste, and that many people are repelled by the aroma. No thanks.

They were selling live lobsters for $8.99 each. Regular $19.99. There was a line of people chattering and pointing.

There is a huge selection of live fish and fresh fish. Rather fragrant back there.

The Korean pop stars shill for Jin ramen. The sexy guy is looking spicy, so he sells the spicy variety.

H Mart carries every type of noodle imaginable - dry, soft, handmade, etc.

These cookies have a very strange name. They are one of the top cookies in Asia - a thin wafer with a mascarpone filling.

They sell a lot of different kinds of ginseng.

Many types of sauce as well.

Banchan is their deli - ready-made Korean foods.

You can bag your own mix of fish balls for $6.99 a pound.

It's one way in, and one way out. You leave by the Food Hall, past another armed guard.

I did a lot of thrift shopping this month, and August 16th was National Thrift Shop Day, so I went to my favorite - the Salvation Army. I wore a dress from the Gap that I got at the Army last summer. I took it on vacation with me.

I didn't stay long, because I immediately found four things. All of them were $4 each.

First, this Loft dress that retails for $110. It has a tie neck with a ruffle. I will wear it just like it is styled in the stock photo, but probably will add a navy belt.

Then, a Halogen dress that retails for $129. Halogen is an in-house brand from Nordstrom. This tiered dress is probably best left unbelted.

I loved this Wyldr dress. The only example that I could find online was secondhand from Poshmark for $29. They are from the UK and sold on ASOS. On that site, they are $137. Perfect with boots.

As I was leaving, I spied this jacket on the return rack. It's a Caslon Utility Jacket from Nordstrom that retails for $119.

All of these will be great for this fall.

On August 17th, my FIL Win took sick. Doc had to go over and stay there to help them out for about two weeks until he improved. I decided to fix my hair color that day - I was tired of yellow hair. Next time, I will go more strawberry blond.

I just hung out that day. I wore Paige jeans and a bright ethnic top from Kohl's that I have had for many years. My sneakers are from Temu - I wear them a lot. considering they are yellow. I also wear the jeans frequently - Paige is a pricy brand and I got them at the thrift a couple of months ago. I really like them.

On August 21st, I took my MIL Mimi out for a drive, just so she could get out of the house. She was sick prior to Win becoming ill, so she hadn't been out in quite a while. I wore a dress from Amazon and the Liz Claiborne shoes. We drove down the coast to Newport Beach, then back up through Fountain Valley to stop by Heritage Park. Mimi loved it. We brought home two flavors of Umpqua Ice Cream - Lemon Bar and Rocky Road. This ice cream is made by the Umpqua Indians up in Idaho, Montana and Oregon.

My lapis and pearl necklaces are from Temu.

Ipsy had a big sale, and I ordered two tubes of Grande Brow. They were the large size. Ipsy had them for $10, and they retail for $73. It works very well. I tried to go back and get more, but it sold out.

On August 26th, I went for my annual mammogram. I wore white slacks by White House Black Market and a chiffon poncho top from Spiegel. That is a flashback brand from the 80s or 90s. My starfish necklace is from Temu.

My August Birchbox came. This was a good one - two full size products! Inside, from left to right:

1) Vitamins and Sea Beauty Favorites Kit - rejuvenating and toning serums.

2) Korres Foaming Cream Cleanser

3) Pur Melt Away Gel Makeup Remover and Forever Clean Gentle Cleanser

4) Aromatherapy Associates Revive Morning Bath and Shower Gel

5) Birchbox Diamond nail file.

Pandi does yoga occasionally - this is her downward dog pose.

Last summer, I got one of those That Hair halo falls but never tried it out. It's a lot of hair. I probably won't ever wear it. It looks fake to me.

On August 29th, we went over to help move some furniture around for my in-laws, so that they can live downstairs while they recuperate. I wore peach jeans by Fabrizio Gianni and a top from Worthington. The jeans had stains on them, but I washed them with OxyClean and it came out. Mama Mia!

The last thrift trip for quite a while happened on August 29th. I went to the Salvation Army $2 sale. It's hard to resist when the deals are this good. I justify it by claiming that it helps the charity out. Here is what I got:

1) An Elizabeth and James top, retail $272. This is the brand from the Olsen Twins. It is polyester and appears to be extremely overpriced. They classify their brand as "Ultra-Luxury". I don't agree.

2) A Michael Kors top with gold chain trim, retail $110

3) A Tommy Bahama Beach Side Palm Sweater retail $148

4) An Indigo Rose gauze dress, retail $60

5) A Bold Elements Bodycon dress, retail $43. This is a JC Penney brand. Our local JCP is closing.

6) A Limited Top, retail $33. I'm not sure if this store is still in business.

7) A Lauren Michelle Embroidered top, retail $65

8) A Cache satin blouse, retail $69. I loved that store when it was still around!

That afternoon, I went out for lunch with my friend Mary. I wore my Amazon knit pant set. Amazingly enough, I have not yet spilled any goop on this pristine white outfit.

I brought her this Poison beaker filled with makeup goodies.

Here I am on Labor Day, wearing the Time and Tru dress from earlier this month. It is quite oversized. Peep the new LC shoes again. I bbqed hamburgers and bratwursts. I am really enjoying my new BBQ!

Now that Jacki has settled down, I am fixing up the back yard again, and replanting everything she has dug up over the past two years. I wore a peasant style skirt by The Limited and a tank top from Old Navy to go to Lowe's to get bark for the planters. I will add flowers after the heat wave we are having has quieted down.

Yesterday, I wore a jumpsuit by Beach Royale to go on a search for these viral Korean ice creams. I found them at H Mart.  I got white peach and lemon. They are delicious!

I got my necklace at the Long beach Antique Swap Meet a couple of months ago.

Today was just a dog walking and exercising day. I wore a bandana print skirt from Liz Sport with a ruffled top by Rachel Roy. I had a headache afterward - I sweated buckets, so I do believe I got a little overheated. I spent the afternoon doing this blog post

So that's about all for now. I scored $2137 dollars' worth of loot (including the Grande Brow) for less than $100. Now I don't feel guilty AT ALL!  Next week, Jacki goes to the vet for her yearly checkup. I hope hers comes out as good as mine did. That will not be a bargain. Stay tuned!
